“PREVIOUSLY WHEN I THOUGHT OF WORKWEAR, I THOUGHT OF CLINGY, ITCHY MATERIAL, ILL FITTING BLAZERS AND CLUNKY SHOES OVER TIGHTS THAT YOU EVER-SO-CAUTIOUSLY TRIED TO KEEP LADDER FREE”

Ahh work wear, something which used to fill me with dread at school work experience days, sifting through my wardrobe only to dress like a dowdy woman 30 years my senior, only to sit in a office I had no desire to be in. My first experiences of ‘proper work’ didn’t exactly excite me nor fill me with a burning desire. Previously, when I thought of work wear, I thought of clingy, itchy materials, ill-fitting blazers and skirts and clunky shoes over tights that you ever-so-cautiously tried to keep ladder free. Admittedly I loved wearing uniform at school, I felt smart, put together and didn’t have to fuss about what to wear every day or people judging your social status on your River Island handbag and choice of outerwear.

Fast forward into my little adult life and I’ve become quite fond of work wear, probably because I’m minus the uninspiring jobs I had to sit at for a week at work experience! Our clothes have the power to motivate, inspire and make us feel pretty damn good, so why save your fave pieces for the weekend? Whatever your job, you dress yourself in the morning ready to smash the day ahead, so whether you have strict dress rules or not, there’s always some way you can put your own little twist on things. Here I’m sharing what I’ve learnt and 3 ways you can change up your workwear style, to really lift your confidence, mood and make you feel like you can boss it everyday!

SWITCH UP YOUR ACCESSORIES

Your work bag doesn’t have to be boring and practical doesn’t have to be boring either. Keep it smart, structured and with enough room for all your days essentials. You can never go wrong with a structured cross body or a little classic handbag. For work I like to keep the shape simple and then perhaps look for bold colours, prints and details, or if I’m going for an interesting shape, I’ll keep the colour paired back. Accessories really have the power to bring a simple look to life, even a humble, white, shirt and black trousers. Pair it with one of these babies and let the compliments flood in!

LOOK FOR TWISTS ON CLASSIC PIECES

It’s no surprise that tailored, black trousers are pretty much everyones workwear staple, so why not invest in some that have little twists and details? Getting the tailoring on point is key and I must admit I was really impressed with these Fashion Union babies that I’m wearing – they’re super affordable but also the tailoring is pretty good for your buck – being the shorty I am I thought they’d be super long but was pleasantly surprised!

Look for little twists on staple pieces – like the lace trim on these! A tie waist, pleats, bows, embellishments, cropped, prints and stripes. It doesn’t have to be plain and boring, you can choose a classic shape and then hunt down pieces that are a little bit different – ASOS are awesome for this! Also make sure you spend time trying them on and really getting a pair that fit properly, are comfortable and make you feel UHH-MAZING!

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY SHIRTS

Okay, so perhaps you’d have to draw the line at some point, but if there’s one thing I can’t physically stop myself buying, it’s shirts! Whenever I stroll into Zara, my changing room rack is practically collapsing under the weight of the sheer amount of shirts I grab. I like having my favourite few pairs of trousers and go-to denim, so shirts for me are where you can really change things up! The biggest tip, especially for work wear is having comfortable and breathable material – so spend some time actually feeling the pieces your trying on!

This shirt has been my fave for over a year, simple, breathable but with those all important flared sleeves! If you’ve read this post you’ll know I love a bit of sleeve action 😉 Similarly with trousers, look for details and updates to bring your shirt collection up to the current season and trends. Ruffles, frills and flared sleeves are my go to at the moment! I also love matching my lippy for the ultimate power-dressing look (also nothing makes it appear like you have your life together like slapping on some bold lippy 😉 )
