HOW TO TAKE YOUR OUTFIT FROM DAY TO NIGHT

HOW TO TAKE YOUR OUTFIT FROM DAY TO NIGHT

SPEEDY AND SAVVY DRESSING MADE EASY BY A SWIPE OF LIPPY AND A TOUSLE OF YOUR LOCKS

We all know the oh so real struggle of having to dress for multiple occasions throughout one day. This can happen amongst the hectic-ness of the festive season but also in the height of summer, when family barbecues and drinks on the beach pry us away from our desks. This is a particular skill I have slowly come to (and am still) mastering, thanks to my blogger work life. You constantly find yourself having to dress for a multitude of occasions spanning across one day and more than often requiring no less than a suitcase! This can range from breakfast meetings leading to events at nightclubs and rooftop bars or you can find yourself having to dress for a hardcore workout session followed by a formal dinner (hiya sweat and sticky hair!)

The fact is, I’d rather not lug a heavy bag around London all day, having to keep a watchful eye on said bag in the corner of the room at every event. And so I decided to start dressing savvy and make outfits work for all occasions, come rain, shine, casual drinks or dancing on tables. Boohoo challenged me to pick a skirt and style 2 outfits around it, making holiday dressing, capsule wardrobes and general life so much easier! There’s nothing I love more than a bit of versatility and you might have seen I did a similar post in the winter here! So now we’re into summer, here’s how I’m taking my outfits from day to night this season!

STICK ON SOME SASSY SUNNIES AND CHANGE UP YOUR HAIR FOR DAY TIME CHIC

Firstly start with your base piece – the piece everything is central around – I went for this killer £16 skirt (that lace up detail though!) – I usually find it easier to keep the bottom half pieces the same – it’s easier to change your top half up! I was also majorly obsessing over these Leopard print booties so made sure they were also a focal point! You’ll know from my Instagram that I’m not the most colourful of dressers, nor do I wear a lot of print, but a bit of leopard has always caught my eye! I’m also loving how the studs and buckles toughen the look up!

My fave Ray Ban frames are always a must come day time and I whacked my hair up in a little bun to let this fringed beauty of a jumper do the talking! If this isn’t the ultimate summer festival knitwear I don’t know what is! This is also my go to hair style of the moment as it comes out in the most beautiful waves after you’ve left it in for a few hours! (more of these cheeky beauty hacks coming to my YouTube soon!) so you’ve already prepped your hairstyle come night time!

BEING ABLE TO CHANGE UP YOUR LOOK WITHOUT CARRYING A BAG THAT WEIGHS THE EQUIVALENT OF A SMALL CHILD IS ALWAYS A BONUS

For evening, I wanted to accentuate the leopard print and contrast the edgy skirt with something more delicate so spotted this gorge blouse! Embroidered blouses are everywhere this summer so I was dying to add one to my ever expanding floordrobe wardrobe. My fave way to change up my look for the day is to let my hair down (literally!) add a swipe of lippy and either change my top or chuck on a jacket!  It’s remarkable what a bit of red lipstick and some Batiste can do!

The best part was that I could still change up my look but without carrying around a bag that weighs the equivalent of a small child. My trusty cross body was suffice, simply stash with a travel perfume (nothing like a little refresh) lipstick, sunnies, a mini dry shampoo, some powder and you’re good to go! Sometimes I roll up an extra blouse and pop it in, but on this occasion I layered up and wore it underneath!

LEARNING TO LOVE YOUR BODY

LEARNING TO LOVE YOUR BODY

“WHAT WITH ASOS SHOWCASING THEIR BEAUTIFUL MODELS UNRETOUCHED & BLOGGERS BRINGING RELATABILITY TO THE GAME, YOU CAN’T HELP BUT CELEBRATE WHAT THE INDUSTRY IS BECOMING!”

No matter who you are, where you came from or how you are raised, I’m sure we all share this common attribute – that in some point in our lives, we’ve all perhaps encountered some issues surrounding body confidence and our feelings towards our bodies. It’s a delicate subject, one whereby if you don’t choose your words carefully, you could unintentionally cause offence. But it also has the power to unite, inspire and empower people all across the globe and that’s one thing worth focusing on! Social media, catwalks and magazines of course traditionally sometimes plant ideas in our minds that we should perhaps appear a certain way. That blemishes, stretch marks and scars should be erased and with that, sometimes ourselves.

But what with the likes of ASOS embracing their beautiful models in their full, un-retouched glory and bloggers bringing some more reliability to the game (SO many gorgeous, unique and wonderful gals!) It can’t help but make you celebrate the changing times and wonderful diversity of the industry. There will always be downfalls, you could choose to focus on the negatives or embrace the beautiful thing it’s becoming and see the good. Let this post motivate and inspire you to love your beautiful selves and be confident in your skin! Here’s a few ways I like to build my confidence up and remind myself to love my body!

POWER DRESSING

Ahh the power of clothes. Not only are they pretty and fun but they also have the power to make you feel like a total boss. Dress how you like and love, not how you think you should dress. Everyone feels good in different things, some people feel like they can take over the work in heels and dresses and others in denim or a cosy knit. There’s no secret formula but don’t settle for clothes that don’t make you FEEL good. These Sweaty Betty leggings for example, the luxe material and unbeatable fit makes me feel absolutely amazing! Similarly my fave Topshop Jeans are always something I can rely on to boost my confidence. When shopping, spend time trying on different styles and sizes, you’ll know when its ‘the one’ because you won’t be able to pull yourself away without the item in tow 😉

NOURISH YOURSELF

I‘ve mentioned it before and I’ll say it again because I’ve found that nourishing yourself really is key. I’m not an expert, nor a nutritionist, but I do know that when I eat well, I feel damn good. When I feel good, I don’t feel like I need to look a certain way, because truly feeling good in yourself surpasses any other feeling for me. We know we should be eating fresh, wholesome and as natural as possible. I bloody love pizza, cheese and wine and there ain’t no way in hell I’m giving that up, not for all the abs in the world.

I won’t let myself feel too guilty because life is too short, however my body confidence does tend to plummet if I continually eat things that bloat me out, high in sugar or processed. Everything in moderation and if you try to keep the majority of your diet fresh and wonderful, you definitely should enjoy that prosecco and cake! Your body was built to look after your beautiful soul, so look after it 🙂

DO THINGS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL AMAZING!

Similarly to nourishing yourself, doing things that make you feel amazing do wonders for your self esteem. I’m not going to lie – I do feel guilty when I don’t exercise – of course I do. Our bodies were made to do amazing things so I try to get this butt moving whenever I can. However, in the same breath there’s no point beating yourself up when you don’t live up to that brutal workout regime you vowed to stick to at new years.

Some people adore the gym, others don’t. Find something that excited and motivates you! Brisk walks, boxing, swimming, dancing – get your body going, release endorphins and feel amazing and alive! If you go to the gym 4 times a week or none, go at your own pace, be kind to yourself and don’t compare – we are all amazing and unique!

3 WAYS TO CHANGE UP YOUR WORKWEAR STYLE

3 WAYS TO CHANGE UP YOUR WORKWEAR STYLE

“PREVIOUSLY WHEN I THOUGHT OF WORKWEAR, I THOUGHT OF CLINGY, ITCHY MATERIAL, ILL FITTING BLAZERS AND CLUNKY SHOES OVER TIGHTS THAT YOU EVER-SO-CAUTIOUSLY TRIED TO KEEP LADDER FREE”

Ahh work wear, something which used to fill me with dread at school work experience days, sifting through my wardrobe only to dress like a dowdy woman 30 years my senior, only to sit in a office I had no desire to be in. My first experiences of ‘proper work’ didn’t exactly excite me nor fill me with a burning desire. Previously, when I thought of work wear, I thought of clingy, itchy materials, ill-fitting blazers and skirts and clunky shoes over tights that you ever-so-cautiously tried to keep ladder free. Admittedly I loved wearing uniform at school, I felt smart, put together and didn’t have to fuss about what to wear every day or people judging your social status on your River Island handbag and choice of outerwear.

Fast forward into my little adult life and I’ve become quite fond of work wear, probably because I’m minus the uninspiring jobs I had to sit at for a week at work experience! Our clothes have the power to motivate, inspire and make us feel pretty damn good, so why save your fave pieces for the weekend? Whatever your job, you dress yourself in the morning ready to smash the day ahead, so whether you have strict dress rules or not, there’s always some way you can put your own little twist on things. Here I’m sharing what I’ve learnt and 3 ways you can change up your workwear style, to really lift your confidence, mood and make you feel like you can boss it everyday!

SWITCH UP YOUR ACCESSORIES

Your work bag doesn’t have to be boring and practical doesn’t have to be boring either. Keep it smart, structured and with enough room for all your days essentials. You can never go wrong with a structured cross body or a little classic handbag. For work I like to keep the shape simple and then perhaps look for bold colours, prints and details, or if I’m going for an interesting shape, I’ll keep the colour paired back. Accessories really have the power to bring a simple look to life, even a humble, white, shirt and black trousers. Pair it with one of these babies and let the compliments flood in!

SHOP MY ACCESSORY PICKS!

LOOK FOR TWISTS ON CLASSIC PIECES

It’s no surprise that tailored, black trousers are pretty much everyones workwear staple, so why not invest in some that have little twists and details? Getting the tailoring on point is key and I must admit I was really impressed with these Fashion Union babies that I’m wearing – they’re super affordable but also the tailoring is pretty good for your buck – being the shorty I am I thought they’d be super long but was pleasantly surprised!

Look for little twists on staple pieces – like the lace trim on these! A tie waist, pleats, bows, embellishments, cropped, prints and stripes. It doesn’t have to be plain and boring, you can choose a classic shape and then hunt down pieces that are a little bit different – ASOS are awesome for this! Also make sure you spend time trying them on and really getting a pair that fit properly, are comfortable and make you feel UHH-MAZING!

SHOP MY FAVE BOTTOMS

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY SHIRTS

Okay, so perhaps you’d have to draw the line at some point, but if there’s one thing I can’t physically stop myself buying, it’s shirts! Whenever I stroll into Zara, my changing room rack is practically collapsing under the weight of the sheer amount of shirts I grab. I like having my favourite few pairs of trousers and go-to denim, so shirts for me are where you can really change things up! The biggest tip, especially for work wear is having comfortable and breathable material – so spend some time actually feeling the pieces your trying on!

This shirt has been my fave for over a year, simple, breathable but with those all important flared sleeves! If you’ve read this post you’ll know I love a bit of sleeve action 😉 Similarly with trousers, look for details and updates to bring your shirt collection up to the current season and trends. Ruffles, frills and flared sleeves are my go to at the moment! I also love matching my lippy for the ultimate power-dressing look (also nothing makes it appear like you have your life together like slapping on some bold lippy 😉 )

3 LIFE LESSONS LEARNT FROM 3 YEARS OF BLOGGING

3 LIFE LESSONS LEARNT FROM 3 YEARS OF BLOGGING

“HONESTLY, I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE OR WHO I WOULD BE WITOUT MY BLOG AND MAN, HAS IT TAUGHT ME A THING OR TWO!”

July marked the 3rd year of Style Petal. The blog that survived the 3 previous ones before it. 3 years of rambles, outfits, probably too many coffee flat lays and spilling my thoughts onto the world. Many wonderful friendships, many incredible oppertunities and a few awkward ‘I don’t feel fancy enough to be here’ moments! It’s become some sort of a tradition to mark your blogs birthday, or ‘blogiversarry’ and why not? More and more people are grabbing the confidence to show the world their thoughts, dreams and passions and that’s bloody amazing!

So I thought it was about time to celebrate my own little corner of the internet, because, well, I’m pretty proud of what it’s become and super excited to see where it’s heading! Next year I’m tempted to just organise a massive garden party for loads of lovely bloggers, to get together, make friends, inspire one another and just have fun! But for now, I thought I would share 3 life lessons that I’ve learnt through 3 years of blogging, because honestly, I have no idea where or who I would be without my blog and man, has it taught me a thing or two!

EVERYTHING WILL ALWAYS BE OKAY

In all walks of life, we encounter problems, struggles and worries. Here I talked about how to be a  positive person and one thing I always try to remember is that time heals all and one day, you’ll laugh about something you once stressed about! Everyone encounters stress at home, relationships and work but you will always be strong enough to get through it! (Can I be your own personal cheeleaders please?!) You’ve got this, YOU’VE ALWAYS GOT THIS! Sometimes I have occasions where I feel deflated, not good enough and like I don’t fit in, then I constantly doubt what I’m doing is good enough, if people enjoy it enough and then there’s that little thief of joy called comparison. Roll with the hard times, they inspire you to be the best you can be.

NEVER, EVER LET OTHERS OPINIONS EFFECT WHAT YOU DO

I wrote back in October all about why you should care less about what others think. That post was inspired by a few lovely souls who message me about my blog, instagram, etc, one of them being a lovely friend from college. She asked me how I overcame peoples judgement and plucked up the courage to start a blog. I can’t tell you how sad it makes me feel when I get asked questions like that, that theres people who actually put others down, make fun and laugh at those who want to blog. I know because it happened to me, petty girls I barely knew from my small town, a bit older, should have known better yet found some strange satisfaction from making fun. I can only feel sorry for these people and hope they find piece with whatever makes them act in such a way.

No matter how annoying and at times, crushing it was (it eventually stopped) if you want to do something – dance classes, die your hair, learn to sing, blog – don’t let anyone ever tell you or make you feel like you can’t. You could be the juiciest peach in the world and someone will still hate peaches. I remind myself of this anytime I doubt myself, my worth or worry about judgement. Throw yourself into everything you do with passion, love and soul. Life is too short t live any other way or let people hold you back.

DRESS AND LIVE FOR YOU AND ONLY YOU, ALWAYS!

I thank my parents for the way they raised me; I don’t know exactly what they did, but they instilled in me everything I live by today – to always do things for yourself and no one else. I’m a huge people pleaser, I’ll admit that and often forsake my feelings for others happiness. This said, I’m never willing to give up my passions  or sense of self for anyone. I’ve never dressed for the 18 year old guy I fancied at school, I’ve never dressed to fit in, done my makeup for others or worked a job to please someone.

If everything you do truly makes you happy and makes your soul sparkle, you’ve pretty much got the key to nailing life.Wear the crazy dress, the OTT shoes to the family BBQ, die your hair the rainbow and follow your dreams. It’s your life only, so what’s the pointing living it for someone else.

I really hope you loved this one my beauts and that you took maybe a little something away from it! A HUGE thank you to every single one of you, whether you’ve been here for 3 years or 3 minutes, thank you for taking the time to read and share your thoughts and stories.

3 Ways to manage your time like a girl boss

3 Ways to manage your time like a girl boss

“WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN LITTLE WAYS OF GOING ABOUT IT AND IT’S A TOPIC THAT SOUNDS SCARILY GROWN UP AND AT TIMES, PERHAPS A LITTE MUNDANE.”

Time management; probably something all of us do, even without consciously realising. Badly, very well, sporadically, haphazardly – we all have our own little ways of going about it and it’s a topic that sounds scarily grown up and at times, perhaps a little mundane. But the fact is we need a little time management within our lives, whatever your job, whatever your day to day schedule – managing your time efficiently and with a little thought can make the biggest of differences to our lives.

Time management isn’t limited to a certain lifestyle – I needed time management when I worked 4 jobs, juggling working in a coffee shop, a cocktail bar, acting and blogging and I still need it now. Without it, I can feel without purpose, un-proactive and lost and with it I feel like I can take over the world (no exaggeration necessary – you shall see this once put into practice!) So here’s my 3 ways to manage your time like a girl boss – from one aspiring bossy to another.

LIVE FOR THE FUTURE

I constantly keep a little bank of inspirations – a notebook spilling with thoughts, musings and blog post ideas, waiting for the right concept to bring them to life. I’ve worked with my fave Watch guys Ice before over on Instagram, I adore a watch brand that finally brings us luxe, sleek and quality designs without the £1000 price tag – which was why I was super excited to bring you this post in collaboration with them! This seemed like the perfect time to share my time management tips with you all that I’ve been scribbling down for a while! Which brings me to one of the most obvious, but important things about time management – A WATCH! A chic accessory, yes, but also an instantaneous and effective way to always make sure a gal is always on time. I’m sporting the City Tanner ( V. Appropriate for a day in Englands Capital!) My top tip? If your a serial late runner – set your watch 5/10 mins late – it’s guaranteed to always get you shifting (and running for my train only to be early 😉 )

MAKE LIKE A BOSS & GRAB A SASSY DIARY

I‘ve always loved the yearly tradition of picking up a new diary to motivate me for the year ahead – from writing in my GCSE’S to finding my way into adulthood (crap, I’m an adult?!) and scheduling in press days. My friends have often asked why on earth I still use a pen and paper and not my iPhone for scheduling – I can’t quite say why, but I can’t seem to shake the classic diary. It’s almost as if it isn’t set in stone if you haven’t written it down – tapping it into my iPhone calendar just won’t do, this makes me sound so anti millennial which is ironic when I spend 80% of my time on Instagram! In all seriousness, having a sassy diary does wonders in making you feel like your have your life together (even if you don’t!) I feel very organised and grown up writing things down and thats the way I like it and what works for me!

Paperchase do adorable ones, I tend to go for the handbag friendly sizes and jot everything down to my workouts, meetings, events, holidays, birthdays and everything in between. This is particularly helpful when you need to jot down timings too for things, knowing where and when you have to be always keeps me on track. Always make sure to factor in travel time – when we shot this we skipped between meetings and into my all time, fave, lunch spot in the City – No.11 Pimlico Road! If you can’t resist phone organisation you can always take a pic of the weeks schedule anyways 😉

FAIL TO PREPARE, PREPARE TO FAIL

Kind of sounds like something a grandparent would say after you’ve forgotten someones birthday card, but it really does ring true – I’m all over the place if I fail to prepare myself – I’d rather spend time over preparing and feeling at ease than panicking like a mad woman! If you have a busy day – prepare everything you possibly can the evening before in order to sleep easy. Lay your outfit out, pack your bag, check where you need to be and at what time, transport (know which train or what route on your sat nav you’re heading!), sort your food out and everything will fall into place a lot easier!

I can’t say how many times spending an extra 10/20 mins an evening preparing has helped me in the long run (and I’m the type of person who ALWAYS leaves things to the last minute, so this has definitely helped kick the habit!) The fact is when we don’t manage our time, it’s easily wasted and time is SO precious. Having a down day? THATS OKAY, enjoy it and watch a Harry Potter marathon! You’re allowed to enjoy down time, factor in time especially for that – In fact I wrote here all about the importance of taking time out!! Then refresh yourself and feel motivated to kick butt the next day and smash everything on that to do list! That’s the work life balance and that’s what proper time management is all about!

SHOP THE LOOK

I hope you loved this one beauts – I’ve always felt on top of the world when I manage my time effectively – so I thought why not share the love and hopefully it will help you guys too! I’d love to hear if you have any tips that really help you to get going and smash that to do list!

The best long lasting foundations for oily & spot prone skin

The best long lasting foundations for oily & spot prone skin

“MAKEUP IS ART, MAKEUP IS FUN, BUT ABOVE ALL, MAKEUP HAS THE POWER TO FILL THE HOLES THAT CAN BE PUNCTURED IN OUR SELF ESTEEM BY PROBLEMATIC SKIN.”

Ahh foundation, something we spend days, months and years hunting down the perfect one ( or three 😉 ) If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll know that I talk to you guys openly and frankly about the struggles of my problematic skin. I talked about it briefly here and in fact, whenever I raise this topic over on Insta Stories it seems like quite a few of you loves can relate (cheers to the power of the internet and uniting those of us in the same boat, making us feel like we’re not totally alone in our struggles!)

With that said, in response to your incredibly touching and thoughtful messages and words of advice, I thought it was about time I bring more of this to my Blog and Youtube Channel, because if I can help at least one gal and her confidence out a little, by sharing my top war paint picks, then that’s a job well done in my books. Makeup is fun, incredible and it’s art. It also builds us up and helps fill the holes that problematic skin can puncture in our self esteem. So I’m sharing the best long lasting foundations for oily and spot prone skin – here’s helping they work for you beautifuls too! x

THE WING WOMAN OF FOUNDATIONS

Whether you favour a light formula with high coverage, a long lasting and thicker consistency, something that will withstand the sweatiest of clubs, or something to heal your breakouts, I like to think I’ve come up with a selection that does it all. A good foundation is like a wing woman, makes you look good, always has your back and you know you can rely on her time an time again. Life’s too short for friends that let you down and the same applies to foundation – find a good one and you’ll feel like you can take over the world together.

THE CLASSIC

Ahh L’Oreal True Match, the one that makes me ask myself “Why the hell did I ever stop using this?” I picked this up years ago, we had a brief separation and I came running back, apologetically, wondering why I ever left. This really is the dream, high street foundation, whatever your skin type – it’s a multitasking, wonder and I have no doubt everyone could benefit from this. At £9.99 I can afford to stock up and have a drawer full should I find myself critically low.

It’s breathable, blendable, has a shade for everyone and their dog and is super buildable too. I suffer with blemishes in some areas more than others, so being able to layer it on slightly more stubborn areas smoothly is always a winner. The finish isn’t matte, but not super dewey, somewhere beautifully in between, I usually pop some powder on top to set and combat shine and I’m good to face the world!

THE SPLURGE

At £30 this is definitely more of an indulgent purchase, I know there’s foundations going for £100+ on the market, but £30 was still enough for me to have to think on the purchase for about, ohh, 2 years! Estee Lauder Double Wear is a total cult, foundation product, the most highly reccomended by anyone to me, so it was only a matter of time until had to give it a go. Loved by all, but particularly those among us who want the utmost coverage and long lasting of formulas.

I favour the more breathable of products – I have crappy skin so anything that suffocates it makes me feel worse, which is why personally, I reserve this baby for night time or an occasion such as weddings, etc (which is probably why it’s lasted so damn long!) Because this foundation doesn’t budge for anything, the formula is slightly thicker but not too much and if I want something a little sheerer I tend to mix in a bit of moisturiser. This IS the definition of a wing woman, never lets you down and you can totally rely on her time and time again.

THE NEW COMER

It’s not often I fall head over heels so quickly and so intensely, but even before I tried The Body Shops skin clarifying foundation, I knew I was gonna be in for something good. Long lasting but SUPER breathable (like, as in this feels like a BB cream!) yet it has amazing coverage, is non pore clogging and enriched with tea tree – it’s basically a total dream for oily and spot prone skin girlies. I feel GOOD when I wear this, like it’s really helping heal my skin at the same time, instead of mask the problem.

This has become a total and utter favourite and I cannot recommend this enough – it’s pretty much everything I want from a foundation and more and does wonders for my confidence! At £12 it’s also super affordable and has made me want to go into The Body Shop and basically raid their whole make up section – a total new obsession, all whilst being natural and still with the important principles behind the brands ethics, meaning I feel not only good about myself wearing this, but also like I’m not harming the world or animals in the process.

SHOP THE FOUNDATION EDIT

I hope you loved this one huns, I cannot recommend these incredible formulas enough – even if you don’t have problematic skin, they’re so beautiful and long lasting! What are you fave foundations? Would LOVE to hear your recommendations!

Also make sure you’re subscribed to my channel to catch the full low down on my love for these foundations!
