Distressed denim – how to make it work for all occasions

Distressed denim – how to make it work for all occasions

“Never lets you down, always feels comfortable and
whenever I slip on a pair of my faves I instantly feel like
myself.”

Ah distressed denim, always my go to uniform. Never lets you down, always feels comfortable and whenever I slip on a pair of my faves I instantly feel like myself. This is always super handy in an industry that sometimes makes me question my personal style and leaves me feeling unsure of what I want to wear. “Am I under dressed?” “Crap, she’s wearing a dress and I’m in jeans”, “Will people think I’m boring”. “Am I wearing enough trends.”

Self comparison can be a dangerous thing and I wrote all about it here. It’s only natural to do it sometimes, even the most self assured of us do it. It just so happens I feel my best in a pair of slightly dishevelled looking jeans! Of course I’m always met with the sarcastic and slightly tiresome ‘ohh did you buy them like that’ – “You should buy more jeans, they have a hole in them” comments (particularly when I go back home to see family in Devon!) But hell, I feel damn good in a pair of ripped jeans and it just so happens you can really dress those babies up, like I did here with this stunning top from Coast and some killer heels!

“A white tee, blazers, heels, trainers, jumpers, the combinations are endless. They’re relaxed, effortless, choose your fave shape and dress them up or down! I feel surprisingly put together for an evening out in my fave ripped jeans, heels and a shirt!”

‘Not too perfect, rough around the edges and a little bad
ass. Myself, essentially, personified in a pair of jeans.”

I‘ve always been a bit of a laid back dresser, never one to make too much effort, always wanting that casual chic, vibe (unless the occasion calls for it – Then I go ALL OUT! Like at the Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards – God I loved that dress!) I’m guessing that’s why my eye is always drawn to distressed denim – not too perfect, rough around the edges and a little bad ass. Myself, essentially, personified in a pair of jeans.

If you’ve been following my style journey for a while, or my Instagram, you’ll know I’m an avid lover of my blacks, my whites, greys and nudes. Boring, some may say, but I’ve never been drawn to huge, colourful and bold pieces. I do, however, like my colour in doses – my nails, lips, a cross body bag and on my feet. I feel like these incredible, vibrant shoes totally make up for my lack of colour elsewhere and the subtle palette of my usual outfits really makes them pop!

“I ALWAYS feel good in denim and that’s why I love to wear it”

For me, I ALWAYS feel good in denim, and that’s why I love to wear it for all (okay perhaps not a wedding) occasions. Dressed down for lazy summer days, layered with cosy knits during winter and sassed up with heels and some lace or an oversized shirt and a red lip for evening. Gone are the days where denim was just seen as being a work mans uniform, rips or no rips, denim can be both laid back but also incredibly chic and elegant.

Pick your fave shape – high waisted, flared, skinny or straight (I’m a sucker for some baggy boyfriend jeans!) either buy with rips (Yes Grandma – I DID buy them like that!) or do a little DIY job (this is great when re vamping jeans you’ve lost a bit of love for). My Faves are Asos for a fab selection, Topshop (fits like a dream) New Look and H&M. Once you find ‘the one’ – everything else will fall into place and styling will become a breeze, whatever the occasion!

An introduction to luxury shoes – Manolo Blahnik x Farfetch

An introduction to luxury shoes – Manolo Blahnik x Farfetch

“As someone who grew up, sneakily watching marathons of
her sisters Sex and the City box set, this is a pretty big
deal.”

If someone would have said, almost 3 years ago, when I started up this little blog of mine, that in 3 years time I would have the opportunity to work with a brand as Iconic as Manolo Blahnik, I almost definitely, wouldn’t have believed them. As someone who grew up, sneakily watching marathons of her sisters Sex and the City box set, this is a pretty big deal. It’s a bit of a cliche, but whenever I think of Carrie Bradshaw, I think of Manolo’s – two absolute, fashion icons. In March, two wonderful brands, Manolo Blahnik and Farfetch, collaborated and a stunning, new shoe style, the ‘Scipios’ was born!

Inspired by Mr Blahnik’s iconic ‘stiletto’ design and NYC artist Mark Rothko – an abstract expressionist, famous for contrast, colour blocking (I LOVE the contrasting soles and vibrant colours, these babies have already had SO much attention!) The thing I love most about this shoe, apart from the beautiful design and elegant shape, is the whole concept behind them – each of the 5 colours (You can have a little peek here!) has their own ‘personality’ which really personalises the whole process of finding ‘the one’, perfect, shoe. There’s ‘The Romantic one’, ‘The Playful One’, ‘The Mysterious One’, ‘The Modernist One’ or the ‘The Wild One’ – I’d love to know which one’s your pick!

“To me, Manolo’s embody
everything about the kind of
person I want to be. Sassy,
playful, vibrant, elegant and
classic. Five words to
summarise one seriously iconic
shoe and five words
I thrive to make myself,
because who wouldn’t love
to be described as sassy
and elegant atthe same time?!”
A pop of colour really offsets my usual, monochromatic
uniform.

Moving on to the ‘umm, is this actually happening’ moment – I was beyond thrilled to be invited to celebrate the shoe collaboration with 4 other wonderful bloggers and the lovelies at Farfetch and Manolo. We headed to The Lanesborough, in London (which makes me feel like a princess in a Disney movie every time I go!) for a beautiful dinner, drinks and good conversation. I captured the day over on my latest Vlog on my channel, so make sure you have a peek! Cue some hilarious pictures of me being overwhelmed with joy, unboxing my new shoes (the struggles of having an over animated face!)

Never has ‘Give the girl the right pair of shoe and she can
conquer the world’ rung truer.

Now I’ve heard many a girls remark how comfortable Manolo Blahnik shoes are (praise, finally comfortable AND stylish shoes!) and I can confirm that this is totally true! Comfortable and stable, two words I probably don’t immediately think of when go to buy heels, but something which is so important when it comes to actually wearing them for over an hour! There’s also nothing worse (and embarrassing!) than wobbling down a street, catching your heel on absolutely everything and almost breaking your ankle (this has happened WAY too much in the past!) I can report no such occasions have occurred with these beauties. They’ve also survived London’s tube, which always makes a shoe champion, in my opinion!

Farfetch have a seriously gorgeous and plentiful array of Manolo’s – from the colourful, to the subtle, embellished to classic – there’s a Manolo for every girl. Next on my hit list are the black, Sicariata Pumps – some of the girls were wearing them on the evening and my inner magpie was instantly drawn! I also love how my colourful Scipios’s have really made me feel more fun and frivolous when it comes to fashion – even with a tee and denim, they instantly make an outfit more playful and for me, that’s the best part about fashion – having fun and feeling like you can take over the world.

3 Wardrobe classics anyone can wear

3 Wardrobe classics anyone can wear

“I never thought I’d be a blazer and court shoe kinda girl”

My style is classically laid back, minimalist and simple. I like basic colours, with the odd pop of pastel pink or vibrant red. I tend to pick the more basic of structured clothes, clothes styles that have survived past the 80’s, 90’s and into the new millennium. I also like to chuck the odd trend and crazy piece in for good measure (and to perhaps laugh at in years to come – because isn’t that just the best part about fashion!) When Ted Baker challenged me to style up a pair of their shoes, of course I jumped at the chance, I love a good styling challenge and I love putting my own spin on things.

I love how an item can really inspire an outfit, a way of dressing and show a different side to your personality. I never thought I’d be a blazer and court shoe kind of girl. You can’t beat a classic court and that’s what inspired this look, that you can all put your spin on. Every one looks amazing in a killer blazer, heels and great denim. Worn together or separately, they’re 3 total sartorial winners in my books, and here’s why they’re the 3 wardrobe classics that anyone can wear!

A killer, girl boss blazer

Now I’ve got to admit something here; I actually really enjoyed wearing blazers as part of my school uniform. I felt put together, chic and like I could achieve anything. This has stayed with me through to adulthood. (crap, am I really an adult?) Buttoned, embellished or colourful, whatever your taste, find a killer blazer that will carry you through the seasons. The trick is something beautifully tailored to really bring some structure to an outfit. Also, can you believe this one was from Primark?! You guys were loving it in my Primark Haul!

My Picks
Heels that can conquer the world

Finding killer heels is one thing, but finding killer heels that fit, are comfortable and carry you through lifes best moments are another. I’ve always loved Ted Baker for their unique, classic and elegant designs, whether that’s their dresses, bags or shoes, so it was absolute honour to work with them on this! This pair immediately caught my eye, I love the metal detail, the patent, classic look and the signature Ted Baker bow at the back!. The heel is also that perfect height to take you through day to night without any sore feet at the end!

I’ve recently started to dabble with luxury fashion a bit more, as much as I love my bargains I do love the quality and longevity you get with designer brands. I find that Ted Baker is such a wonderful intersection of the two – quality, stunning designs with those other little touches you get with high end shoes but with a slightly more affordable price point. Meaning that you can have beautiful, comfortable shoes that will last you for years but without sacrificing any meals! I truly feel beautifully put together and confident when I slip on my fave heels, there’s something about that ritual of putting them on for us that is wonderfully satisfying and gratifying.

My Picks
Denim that loves your body

I’m sure we can all relate to the very real struggle that is finding the right pair of jeans. Skinny fit, flared, straight, boyfriend or cropped. Whatever your preferred fit, there’s nothing more satisfying than finding a pair that really love your shape! This pair were featured in my March Fashion Favourites and I absolutely adore them!

Much like heels, the right pair of denim can also carry you through all occasions, day or night, spring or autumn. With trainers, flats, sandals or platforms, dress them up or dress them down. Pick your fave shape of the season (I’m loving straight legs and frayed hems!) and then hunt down a great pair at your go to store. I love Topshop because of the different leg lengths available (holla to all your short girls!)

My Picks

How to get over bloggers block

How to get over bloggers block

Ironically, I sit here writing this, feeling really drained, ill,
tired, with no idea what to write

Ah, bloggers, block. Writers, block, artists block, just general, feeling a bit uninspired and no with idea where to start. Ironically, I sit here writing this, feeling really drained, ill, tired, with no idea what to write, despite a seriously extensive list beside me of ideas for times like this. It’s not often I get really bad ‘bloggers block’ but when I do, I feel totally and utterly stuck in a literary hole with no way to climb out.

I really enjoy sitting down and writing my blog posts, I’ve found that since I’ve begun to write a lot more personally, you guys have really been able to relate, perhaps find it helpful and reach out to me with your thoughts and stories, which truly is the best. So when the writing wall hits and you have no idea how to power through, it can be really tough. Here’s how I tackle the dreaded bloggers block.

Change your environment up

As much as the organisational freak inside of me loves staying at my functional desk, sometimes I can become bored and repetitive, especially if I have bloggers block. Escape to a coffee shop, the garden, your sofa or make a pillow forte in your bed. Make yourself a happy space, get cosy and get stuck in. I love to light a scented candle, be in some comfy clothes, play a chilled out playlist and make myself a nice cup of coffee or herbal tea. Hell, you can even go crazy and get some snacks along for the ride! Enjoy being in the company of your thoughts and let the creative juices flow.

Create your blogging bible

If anyone has been watching my insta stories recently, you’ll know that I have more than a few note books always to hand. These are my blogging bibles and I wouldn’t be without them. I make lists anywhere and everywhere I can, arms lengths long of blog post ideas. This always helps to look at when it comes to writing a post. My blog posts usually come together two ways: 1. It will be a collab with a much loved, brand and we will generate the written content and imagery together, so that it flows and connects well, whilst conveying the campaign message, etc.

Or 2. I snap my outfits up, or my fave products and the accompanying text will follow. Sometimes an outfit inspires a whole post, but sometimes I’m at a total loss of what to write about. This is where my lists are like gold, I can easily scan down my ideas to see what would suit the imagery I have. I didn’t have a ‘blog post ideas’ list a year ago and I genuinely have no idea how I functioned without it! I get inspired late at night, on a train, walking down the road – I need something to hand to jot my ideas down, notebook, phone, otherwise my ideas will probably disappear!

Surround yourself with inspiration

Pinterest, is probably one of my favourite ways to easily become inspired. I’m very triggered by imagery. Fashion, beauty, interiors, food – I have boards for everything which really helps me in pulling together ideas for something. Have a browse through your favourite blogs too, become inspired by peoples words and photographs – think to yourself ‘why do I enjoy reading this persons blog?’ – is it their style? Their voice? They aesthetic?

Think how you can emulate that feeling into your own blog. Inspiration and imitation are two different things however, so make sure your don’t blur the lines! (There’s actually a post coming on this subject soon!) Magazines are also great – I love drawing inspiration from the beautiful editorials and adverts in Vogue (I know, how cliche do I sound!) Books are also great – I found that ‘How to Be Parisian’ and ‘Love, Style, Life’ (two classic blogger loved books!) really helped me realise why I love to write and what I want people to gain from it!

Make the most of your creative mind explosions

Like I previously mentioned, I get inspired at very random times. Actually, usually very ANNOYING times (hello 2am wide eyes!) You know, that sudden rush of ideas, feeling so inspired and motivated you genuinely don’t have the time or space to write all your amazing ideas down! I used to continue along with this train of thought, thinking that I’ll write my ideas down ‘in the morning’ or ‘another time’. DON’T DO THIS. The likelihood is, you’ll forget half of it and be unable to pick up where you left off.

WRITE THAT GOODNESS DOWN whilst it’s there! Even if I means getting out of bed and scribbling in a notebook. Some of my best, blog posts have been written this way and actually makes the whole process so much easier! You have ready made content from the heart that would have taken so much longer to produce if you were to try and get yourself into that mindset forcefully. Roll with the brain explosions!

Finding your blogging style

Finding your blogging style

You’ll never wake up and be happy with your blog from day 1, it’s a constant work in progress, it needs nourishing and love.

I wrote about the importance of not comparing yourself to others here, something I’m sure we’re all guilty of now and again. Now more than ever, we’re feeling the pressure to find our ‘blogging style’, our niche and our voices. This isn’t something that can be forced and personally, is found through experimentation, perseverance and reflection. I’m usually one to focus on myself and as long as I’m happy, that’s all that matters, but it’s all too easy to get caught up and compare yourself and your progress to that of others. I look back at blog posts even 3 months ago and think that it’s a load of crap, my images suck or I could have done better. Yes, I could, but you only realise that through trying.  If you fancy a laugh, go all the way back to my 2014 posts, hello awful outfits captured on my old, Samsung phone! It took years, but I finally feel like I’ve found my blogging style and rhythm.

With the rise of bloggers, also comes the occasional, overwhelming sense that you’re just a small, irrelevant and perhaps not fashionable enough fish in a Chanel and Gucci filled pond.

In one of my recent blog posts, here, I had a much needed revelation. I realised that IT’S OKAY to take some time out, relax and enjoy yourself – you will not suddenly come back lost and out of touch. In fact, I came back refreshed and incredibly inspired. I read books, I watched videos, reflected and then came back knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my little corner of the internet. I want to inspire, create and express. I want my images to be a mix of candid street style and fashion magazine editorials (not sure if that’s even possible but this gal’s tryin’!). I want my words to inspire, spark conversation and motivate people to reach for their biggest dreams and aspirations. I want my space to be a source of inspiration, both materialistically and mentally. Go buy those killer shoes and then sit down and come up with a game plan of how you’re going to take over the world!

Go buy those killer shoes and then sit down and come up with a game plan of how you’re going to take over the world!

A blog may always be a work in progress and change and grow with us as people, but, for now, I’m happy with where I’m going and what I’m doing.

My advice, if you’re struggling to find your style, your voice? Take a break. Relax, clear your mind, paint your nails, drive 5 hours away or grab a bottle of wine and make a killer dinner. Whatever it takes, taking time out honestly refreshed my mind beyond belief, so much so that I came back with a totally new perspective. Read your fave books, magazines, blogs and movies. What do YOU enjoy reading about? What is YOUR passion? What do you want YOUR readers to come away with after reading your blog? Figure that out, start writing and the rest will follow. It may not always be perfect, but it’s yours, enjoy the process of creating and learning (and then laugh at the really bad posts years later!)

A blog may always be a work in progress and change and grow with us as people, but, for now, I’m happy with where I’m going and what I’m doing. Now for the next chapter, to feel the same way about my YouTube channel, because frankly, I have no idea what I’m doing and that’s the FUN part!

Learning to appreciate your clothes

Learning to appreciate your clothes

So you guys might have read here that it was my first proper, full blown, fashion week this February, outfit meltdowns and all. I also chatted here, in anticipation of London Fashion Week, that I had an exciting collaboration in the works for LFW and LFW Festival! This year, I worked with Verve –   The official garment care suppliers for LFW and a brand that I’ve felt really passionate about these last couple of months. From meetings, discussing the initial collaboration for London Fashion Week Festival, to learning more about the new products, it’s something I love and have proudly told hundreds of you about for the 2 days I was with them at London Fashion Week festival! We had our own little booth (not biased or anything, but it did look bloody amazing – just look through the #BeAVerveVIP on insta – hello white washed walls, polaroids and neon lights!) we had a photographer, products to play around with, a stylist and I hit the floors of the festival to scout out my favourite styles!

“Being a fashion blogger, clothes are OBVIOUSLY super important to me”

However, at times like Fashion Week, you can really take them for granted, let the oldies get neglected at the back of your wardrobe and totally and utterly forget to take ANY care of your pieces. I was rushing around, leaving things on my ‘floordrobe’ for days, chucking things into piles and also whacking any old stuff into the washer to get those babies clean ASAP! Working with Verve has really made me realise that I definitely need to show my best, loved, garms a little more appreciation! We have skin care regimes, hair care routines and adore our designer handbags – so why not our clothes?

“Hearing people say ‘why has no one else thought of this before’ totally reaffirmed why I wanted to jump on Board with Verve. It’s exciting, fashion forward, different and also a total necessity. We all need to do laundry and we all want our clothes to last as long as possible. (Because when you find the perfect pair of jeans, you want them to love your curves for eternity!) Fashion and laundry really, go hand in hand, so why no one has bothered to actually combine to two and come up with something new, vibrant and with a cool design is beyond me! The Refresh spray is my fave to give my clothes a quick spritz and new lease of life before dashing out the door!”

What is Verve?

Inspired by the fashion industry (FINALLYYYYY someone marrying the two together!) I mean how gorge is the packaging for one?! Verve’s aim is to keep your clothes looking just like new, for longer. Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s bitterly disappointed when they grab a soft jumper from Zara, only to wash it and for it to never feel the same again! Basically, that’s what Verve are tackling with their power house of 4 products, which are sold exclusively online. Let me give you a quick introduction…

1. The Capsules

Non Bio capsules to pop into your washer to leave your clothes fresh and clean. These also smell BEAUTIFUL, as does the whole range, which is a total winner in my books!

2. The Conditioner

Fragranced with delicately floral notes and ultra concentrated to leave your softest knits irressistable!

3. The Serum

Combine with the conditioner to protect the colour, shape and drape of your clothes.

4. The Spray

The best seller and by no surprise! For me, I think of it as a dry shampoo for your clothes, instantly freshening your clothes in between washes, so fab if you’re like me and sometimes in a bit of a rush! I love spritzing this over my coats before I leave the house!

What I wore – Day 1

Storm Dorris decided to grace us with her presence on Day 1 of London Fashion Week Festival, which made all transport a nightmare – and I thought British storms were tame! I couldn’t physically walk without feeling like I was being blown over, so Ubered everywhere. Luckily the festival is all inside! These old Kurt Geiger babies are super comfy, but with a delayed train home they left my little legs exhausted! I debuted this Closet London jumpsuit (which you guys were LOVING on my Instagram & insta stories!) with a crisp shirt and my favourite little quilted, bag! This jumpsuit oozes luxe, the tailoring is SPOT. ON. and the material is so thick and expensive feeling, meaning that I was pretty terrified at the prospect of washing it. The thing is, we may all hate doing laundry, but it’s a necessity and WHY don’t we look after our best loves clothes like we do a designer handbag? THIS is why I love Verve so much – it’s totally changed the way I treat and think about my wardrobe pieces.

What I wore – Day 2

I talked in my post about my reflections on my first fashion week, about how it’s really easy to feel pressured into dressing a certain way, when really, I just want to feel like myself. Day 2 I felt so at ease and comfortable – my fave denim, Ben’s shirt (because it’s so much better than the 100x ones I own!) these amazing Public Desire, gold, slip on loafers and my round, Ray Bans! Add a swipe of red lippy and I was good to go! This was the busiest day, so I was so glad I went for a slightly slouchy, comfortable ensemble! I had so much fun admiring everyone’s outfits, all the designers (the shopping there this year was INSANE) and introducing you guys to Verve – to hear everyone else scream “WHY has no one else come up with this before?!” totally reaffirmed why I wanted to jump on board with Verve so much. Needless to say the Refresh Spray took centre stage, because who isn’t going to fall in love with something that’s been penned ‘dry shampoo for your clothes’ – Hello my new, festival, best friend! I also ADORE these Topshop jeans, the ultimate marriage of straight leg and the skinny jean, I will probably cry when they get too old, so I’m really taking the time to treat them to Verve to make their life a little longer!

Have you guys ever been to London Fashion Week or London Fashion Week Festival? I’d love to hear your thoughts! I had so much fun working with the Verve Girls and I’m so proud to say I’ve worked with them for the Launch of their incredible products, I’m so happy that someones finally decided to vamp up Laundry! Now you have no excuses 😉
