“IF THERE’S ANY MAKEUP LOOK THAT HAS WITHHELD THE TEST OF TIME; IT’S THE HOLLYWOOD, CLASSIC, FELINE FLICK AND PUNCHY RED LIP”
You all know I’m an absolute lover for anything vintage, especially if you follow me and my second hand shopping adventures on Instagram! (Come say hey! @PrimroseBigwood) So when you’re presented with a plethora of new blushes, creamy eyeshadows, matte lipsticks bursting with colour and sharp, liquid eyeliners? We PLAY! For me, makeup is fun, it’s art, it’s expression, so why not have fun with it?
I was instantly inspired by the new, Artistry Studio Shanghai Edition to recreate quite possibly, one of the most famous makeup looks of all time; that of a 1950’s Old Hollywood Glamour Starlet, a-la Marilyn Monroe. 2 hours later on the internet at 1am, a lot of Pinteresting, ordering 4 vintage mirrors and brushes and one deliciously, beautiful, corset later, and I was ready to arm myself with Artistry Studio makeup and play with all the colours and textures!
THE KEY TO THE PERFECT, OLD, HOLLYWOOD MAKEUP
I think this makeup works so well, and is so flattering on everyone is because of the balance and contrast. You have the two main focal points – the lips and eyes, and the rest is kept subdued to let them do the talking. First and most famously, you have a punchy, bold, defined lip. I went for the ‘Spice Red’ in the Artistry Studio Shanghai Edition ‘Light up Silky Matte Lip Colour’, here, to really give a rich, deep, impact to contrast against soft, silky skin. Choose your weapon, juicy gloss or deep, matte – (I’m a matte lover myself!) I love the autumnal shades this range comes in and these lip colours were actually what inspired the whole look!
I adore the precise application to really define your lip shape, and the built in mirror and light up applicator is simply GENIUS! Meaning if you’re on the red carpet, out for pizza or having birthday celebrations, you’re ready to perfectly touch up your pout anywhere! TOP TIP: Start by using the applicator as a lip liner, tracing the outline of your pout with the narrowest part, then beginning to fill in the rest of your lips with colour! This way it becomes more precise and you can build your shape.
Then you have the delicate, graphic flick of the eyeliner (made 1000 x easier by the sharp, precise applicator on the Artistry Studio Shanghai Edition Liquid Pen Pop eyeliner ) I used the ‘Silk Slate’ here, which is a beautiful mix of soft black, meaning it doesn’t quite take away from the punchiness of the lip! There’s also a ‘Silk Noir’ and ‘Silk Sapphire’ – all three being beautifully softened colours, to create a really timeless look! TOP TIP: To create the perfect feline flick, I start at the inside of my eye, tracing my eyelid and then working out to the flick, then draw a line from the outer corner of your eye to meet the flick, so that it continues your natural eye shape and really extends it to that feline shape!
PLAYING WITH SKIN TEXTURE FOR A RED CARPET GLOW
When it comes to skin for a glamorous look, I like to keep it soft, slightly matte with a pinch of colour and smudge of sheen. I prepped my complexion with the Artistry Studio Shanghai Edition 2 in 1 perfecting Matte Finish Primer. They also have a glow finish, but for this look I stuck to Matte. I then injecting a bit of glow with the Soft and silky Eye and Cheek Pop Trio which are GENIUS! They’re Magnetic compacts with mirrors, an eye duo and cheek colour, so you can stack them and mix and match! I used the highlight colour and dabbed onto my cupids bow, nose, brow bone and cheeks with my finger, to really give the look a luxe finish. The formulas are really silky and creamy, so I then mixed both of the blush colours into my cheeks for a deep, rosy, colour and finished by dabbing some browns and creams into my eyes, to add depth and off set the eyeliner.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE LITTLE EXTRA’S
For me, whether I want to feel AMAZING for an event, boost my mood or have a midday pick me up after a long day, for me, the devil is in the little details. Creating rituals that really make you happy and feel incredible. Massage your hands with hand cream for a relaxing habit that also leaves you with silky hands, giving yourself a gel manicure, Dowsing yourself and clothes in your favourite perfume or wearing your special jewellery and rings. Don’t forget these things – its often these that bring us the most joy! The Shanghai Edition also has a trio of beautiful ‘Soft as Silk’ hand creams, as well as three different rollerball fragrances, so you can pop them in your hand bag and have a pick-me-up whether you’re on an airplane or restaurant! Fragrances and hand creams are one thing my hand bag is NEVER without! (I’m a huge fan of the Lotus Blossom and Violet Eau de Toilette Rollerball!)
I had SO much fun creating this look and shoot and giving this classic style a go – what era is your favourite for makeup and style? As always, thank you so much for your love and support on my little blog and instagram!
