WE DEVOUR CONTENT FASTER THAN EVER AND AT WHICH POINT WILL OUR INNER CREATIVITY SUFFER TO MEET OUR HUNGRY APPETITES?
Opening my wardrobe to choose outfit options to wear, photograph and snap up for Instagram has, as of late, left me frustrated with the pressures we have unknowingly inflicted upon ourselves. In a recent post, I talked about the constant ‘conform and perform’ nature of blogging. With fast moving trends, comes the need to jump on the insta-bandwagon and monetise that good stuff (whilst it’s still in stock, obvs.)
We devour content quicker than ever, get angered when our favourite YouTubers upload late and seem to be ploughing out streamlined content, aimed at feeding the masses appetites for pink trouser suits and cat eye sunglasses. (Killer combo though, might I say) Can we keep up with demands? Will we sack off our inner creativity just in order to deliver to our overly ambitious blogging schedules?
MOST PEOPLE DON’T EVEN HAVE ENOUGH COMMITMENT TO MAKE IT TO THE END OF AN INSTAGRAM CAPTION
It’s scary when you see the outcome of many surveys are that people are rapidly becoming less inclined to read blogs. It’s a hot discussion amongst bloggers, with many people typing their thoughts on on whether blogging is dying or not. Hell, most people probably don’t make it through my lengthy, Instagram captions. Life in the 21st century is all about hunger for fast deliverables, be it food, furniture or creative content. It now takes a lot for us to want to relax and watch a long, vlog or have cup of tea enjoying a hearty blog post. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to engage new audiences unless you can offer them something innovative or have a well established fan base. It’s difficult to be uniquely, original when there’s so many, wonderful influencers in what is ‘apparently’ an oversaturated industry. (More on this topic in my post here, and the beef people have with the world apparently becoming bloggers!)
WE DON’T HAVE TO MONETIZE EVERYTHING
But, if you damn work it monetising, you do your thang! Do what you feel happy and comfortable with. Browsing through a vintage shop the other day, I fell in love with a hell of a lot of pink, chiffon and deliciously poofy, 1950’s dresses. I constantly feel like a crap blogger for not always having every single piece of clothing in my wardrobe ready and available to monetise. I see the same, awesome girls getting re-grams a plenty from brands and making a small fortune with affiliate marketing. It’s amazing how far the marketing has come and I get stupidly excited every time I earn commission.
But, in the same breath, I’m always left feeling like I’m under performing in comparison to others and vow to add more insta story swipe ups, push people to use my links and draw attention to them. So I told myself to stop being ridiculous, buy a vintage dress if you want to and don’t let the comparison game get you down (always lethal). Monetise as much or as little as you want, but don’t let it negatively impact your creativity.
IF YOU’LL READ IT, SO WILL SOMEONE ELSE
Yes, we sometimes just want to know where those boots are from. Yes, we occasionally want a quick video that doesn’t particularly stray away from your generic format and we also sometimes don’t have the inclination to read 1,000 words. There will always be a piece you create that isn’t quite for one person, or perhaps more interesting and enticing for a different demographic, but that doesn’t mean we need to bring a grinding halt to things.
With something you passionalty pour yourself into, there will always be someone who can relate and who wants to read, relish and inhale your content! If you feel like someone would enjoy it, learn from it or take something away, whether it be a video, an editorial piece or a life essay – do it and do it unapologetically! Truly, blogging, magazines, books – they’ll never die, because we’re always hungry to learn, to experience and to share it with others.
